Health insurance companies in Nigeria have been the saving grace of many Nigerians as they enable access to medical attention, especially in cases of emergency.
It is common news to hear that one was rushed to a hospital, but, could not be attended to due to the inability to deposit a certain amount of money required by the hospital for the initiation of treatment of a medical issue.
In summary, in Nigeria, many hospitals will not treat nor begin to treat patients without monetary deposits or valid health insurance, hence the need for health insurance companies in Nigeria.
As it were, not many Nigerians can meet either case especially in times of emergencies.
In this post, I am going to introduce you to popular health insurance companies in Nigeria. The post cannot come at a more opportune time because most Nigerians do not have health insurance. Unfortunately, not having health insurance is one, another is not knowing what health insurance is. So, I will explain that briefly.
What is health insurance?
Simply put, health insurance is a type of insurance coverage that typically pays for medicals, surgical, prescription drugs, and sometimes dental expenses incurred by the insured. Health insurance companies are also called health maintenance organisations (HMO).
Now that this is clear, one may wish to ask, how do I go about getting health insurance? Where do I go?
Well, this article will make it easy for you. In no particular order, this is a list of health insurance companies in Nigeria.
National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)
The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Nigeria was introduced in 2005 to ensure access to good health care services to everyone in Nigeria. The NHIS is a corporate body established under Act 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
This was implemented to protect families from financial barriers to health care, and to ensure the availability of funds to the health sector for improved services.
The NHIS plan is one where contributors pool funds together following a pre-payment scheme of a regular standard amount. It is one of the most well-known and most used patterns of healthcare financing around the world. Basically, it involves risk-sharing. This process enables Health Insurance Companies, also known as Health Maintenance Organisations (HMO’s) to attend to individuals, families or groups who require medical attention by paying their medical expenses.

Conclusion
This is a list of my health insurance companies in Nigeria.
As you can know, health they say is wealth. When you have good health, you can have all the energy you need to make all the wealth you want.
However, gaining access to health is sometimes difficult because nobody plans to be ill and treatment can be very exorbitant.
This is the sole reason we have various cases where doctors refuse to treat a patient.
Well, there’s a solution to every problem in the form of health insurance. So, when health emergencies arise, you don’t need to worry about how to handle them because HMOs are here to solve that problem for you.
In case you know about some other HMOs that haven’t been listed above. Feel free to post them in the comment section.
