Health hack: Easy ways to eliminate or control bad breath

Bad breath is very embarrassing and many times we can do less about it.

It is caused by a group of anaerobic, sulphur-producing bacteria that grows under the surface of the tongue and often in the throat and tonsil area. These anaerobic bacteria contain radical enzymes that aid the digestion by breaking down proteins into amino acids and in the process, they excrete waste as odorous and bad tasting compounds that cause bad breath.

Bad breath can be exacerbated by either oral problems or health problems and when caused by health problems, bad breath can be a sign of a very serious disease. The smell sometimes can be perceived as cheesy, fishy, acidic, musty, faecal and they all signify something.

Bad breath can cause social awkwardness

Most people who suffer from bad breath (chronic halitosis) are ashamed of it and often look for measures to end it or get better. Aside from the obvious hygiene and health implications, bad breath has been known to ruin relationships and communication with people. It can also lead to a poor first impression and social awkwardness.

If you or someone you know suffer from the condition, adopting these techniques can help to significantly ameliorate it. So here we go.

1. Proper Brushing Technique

You know that to brush your teeth drives away odours, but are you doing it the right way? Brushing twice a day is highly recommended. It is very important that you brush all surfaces of the teeth, including the gumline, inside portion of the teeth near the palate and tongue. Spend more time brushing the entire surface of your tongue where bad bacteria tend to linger the most after you brush the teeth and gumline Be sure to use good, soft toothbrushes that

have tongue cleaners at the back.

2. Replace Your Toothbrush

You don’t need to be reminded to change your toothbrush once in three months. To maintain a fresh breath, use clean oral hygiene tools. When your toothbrush becomes old, it’s time for a new one. Dentists recommend a change of toothbrush after a three-month usage.

3. Stimulate Saliva Production

A dry mouth can be a cause of bad breath. Try sugar-free chewing gums or hard candies to stimulate saliva production. If all of these fails, you might need to visit the dentist to make provision for artificial saliva to help moisten the mouth thereby preventing bad breath.

4. Choose Foods Carefully

What we eat naturally play a big role in our health and especially our breath. Seasonings and spices such as garlic or vinegar can linger well past mealtime, so eat them infrequently. It is also advised that we avoid, sugary and sticky foods that last on the teeth longer and are more difficult to remove.

By brushing twice daily with a clean toothbrush, maintaining enough saliva in your mouth, choosing food carefully and using other tips for bad breath control, you can keep your breath fresh and pleasant all the time, you don’t have to be embarrassed anymore.
