Was Mortal Kombat 2021 a flop? – Warner Bros executive answers

Mortal Kombat 2021 came with a lot of surprises – many appreciated and few frowned upon – yet, if you have wondered about its commercial performance, here is an answer from a Warner Bros. executive in charge of the numbers.

Speaking to IGN, WarnerMedia’s executive vice president of growth and revenue Brad Wilson says that the film performed better than they expected.

“Mortal Kombat was an interesting title for us, because I will say that while we expected it to do well, we did not expect it to do as well as it did. It’s been one of our top assets on the platform,” Wilson said.

He added that it has been a great customer retainer as well since its April 2021 release. Customers who joined to watch the video game adaptation went on to watch other titles on HBO Max. It is equally important to note that until there are details concerning actual number of views, we cannot judge it as successful because the in-house projections may have been low and surpassing it may not necessarily make it a success.

This news further gives fans the hope that Warner Bros. will continue working on future sequels of the rebooted franchise. Of course, this is no longer a surprise as Joe Taslim, who played Sub-zero, already revealed that he is signed on for four more films.

Since its release, Mortal Kombat 2021 has weathered mixed criticism. Perhaps the most common is the total exclusion of the Earthrealm vs. Netherrealm tournament. The producers likely have plans for a tournament in future releases with new characters joining the foray, already the ending teased the introduction of Hollywood action figure Johnny Cage.
