The popular app, which is owned by Facebook, will be restricting the number of messages a user can forward a message to five. The application hopes to battle “misinformation and rumours“, organisation administrators said earlier this week.
Beforehand, a WhatsApp client could forward a message to 20 groups or individuals. The limit to five is a measure WhatsApp set up in India in July following the spread of rumours via web-based networking media prompted killings and lynching endeavours.
The app had also been implicated in misinformation in other places such as Brazil, where the political class was accused to have used it to spread lies against rivals.
