When was Google established?
Officially, the search engine was established on 4 September 1998 and was co-founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page. This means that technically, Google turned 23 on 4 September 2021, but in 2005 the company shifted its anniversary celebrations from 4 September to 27 September while celebrating a new record in terms of indexed pages.
It all started in 1996 when the founders started Google as a research project on Stanford University’s private network. At first, they started the search engine as BackRub because it was Page’s idea to crawl pages for backlinks and understand how to rank them.
A year after that, they paired up and developed the first prototype of Google together in their dorms. Since then, the search engine has grown to become one of the most expansive tech companies globally, having market dominance, which has increased scrutiny from lawmakers, regulators, and its own employees.
