Nigerian singer Chidinma Ekile is currently trending for her decision to focus on gospel songs from now on with her recent track “Jehovah Overdo” signalling what to expect. Christians are welcoming her ‘home’ after her rebranding announcement, why?
Like several other Nigerian singers like including Simi, Waje, and even Rema, Chidinma had begun singing as a youth in her church. Prior to emerging as the winner of Project Fame West Africa in 2010, she was a chorister at the internationally renowned church The Foursquare Church. The church has produced other singers like Waje and gospel musician Frank Edwards.
Thus, her music journey is following a 360-degree trajectory and it has got Christians rejoicing.
“Seeing [Chidinma] quitting secular to become an endtime soldier for Jesus is a wonderful testimony. Nothing is more precious & beautiful than giving your gifts back to the one who gave it to you. Jesus is the way, truth & life [sic],” a Twitter user said about the news.

However, this is not the first attempt she has made to break into the gospel music industry. In fact, her old profiles always indicated that she is a ‘Nigerian gospel singer’, and her first taste of fame, from the audition for the MTN-sponsored reality show, was a gospel song. In 2019, she released a song titled “Holy” with Frank Edwards as well.
In between all this, she went into making mainstream hit songs such as “Kedike”, “Emi Ni Baller”, and “Oh! Baby (You & !)” (featuring Flavour N’abania). She has also won The Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA) and Kora Awards during this time. It is not far-fetched to say that Chidinma has earned her stripes in the mainstream music industry (or secular music industry as Christians prefer to call it).
She now goes by the moniker ‘An Endtime Soldier’ and ‘Minister Chidinma’. Additionally, she signed a record deal with EeZee Conceptz, a gospel record label that manages Nigerian gospel artist Mercy Chinwo. Gospel music fans already anticipate a collaboration between the two singers that they expect to bring the house down.
Ekile has not revealed her future plans as a gospel singer but it will no doubt include more soul searching and praise songs. During her long absence from the music scene, she went on to star in Kunle Afolayan’s 2017 film “The Bridge” and started a non-governmental organisation named NMA Foundation to help blind children.
Chidinma Ekile turning to gospel music is not a new phenomenon as she has been posting about ‘Jesus’ and other Christian-related things in recent years. The warm welcome she has received is heartwarming.
