Michael Jordan, Barack Obama, Colin Kaepernick jerseys set new price world records at Julien’s Auctions in California.

The biggest money sale at Julien’s Auctions on Friday 4th December 2020 went to the Michael Jordan number 23 jersey. This was no ordinary jersey.

It was the 1984 number 23 jersey that the former Chicago Bulls icon lifted at his first news conference as a member of the Bulls as the club announced signing him.

The jersey was sold for $320,000 and it beat the record payout of $288,000 that was previously held by a Jordan jersey. Being a five-time NBA Most Valuable Player and 14-time NBA All-Star playmaker; Michael Jordan’s jerseys are treasured by basketball fans and collectors.

The next was former US President, Barack Obama’s high school number 23 white jersey. Obama had worn the jersey as a senior at Punahou School as a member of the 1979 Hawaii state champion squad.

The Obama jersey went for $192,000 breaking the record of $187,500 that a James high school jersey held. A copy of the 1979 school yearbook showing Obama playing in the jersey went with the sale.

Meanwhile, NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick’s white number 7 signed shirt was sold for $128,000. It broke the record for NFL jerseys. A 1960s Johnny Unitas Baltimore Colts jersey previously held the record at $118,230.

Kaepernick’s jersey’s high value is tied to the controversy surrounding the player’s kneeling protest that has since become symbolic in many other sports.

Additionally, at the auction, LeBron James 2003-2004 Cleveland Cavaliers rookie season signed jersey went for $128,000. It is considered valuable because it bears the earliest-known James autograph on a game-worn jersey.

A signed NBA Finals jersey from the late Kobe Bryant was also sold as well as a 1984 Los Angeles Olympics relay torch and an official team captain’s armband from the 1958 FIFA World Cup.

Kobe’s signed jersey went for $38,400, the Olympics relay torch cost $22,400 and the armband was valued at $10,240. How much more can you spend on jerseys at these auctions?
