It would seem that the younger generation have led the music industry from the shores of the country to the world outside, and while there are obviously many who are above this age bracket and yet are as important in the industry and deserve recognition, this list looks at the youngest ones making waves.
(The list is compiled in no particular order)
1
Wizkid
Born on 16 July, 1990, Wizkid is undoubtedly the musician of the moment with hits after hits this year and since leaving Empire Mates Entertainment, he has soared beyond all measures and is bringing his art to the world beyond Nigeria. Awards keep pouring in for him and he is surprisingly 27 already.
2.
Davido
The rivalry between him and Wizkid may be superficial or real but it is good for their art. Davido is 25 and just celebrated his birthday yesterday. The last two years have been his most successful and he seems to have the key to making a hit track even when he says so little.
3.
Olamide
Third on the list is King Baddo himself, 28 and strong. If the streets have a face, you just saw it up there and if it has a voice, listen to any of his songs at random. Though he still seems to limit himself to the boundaries of the ‘local’ musician, 7 albums in 7 years is a feat that should not go unmentioned.
4.
Tekno
Alhaji Tekno, who is turning 25 next month is multi-talented. He uses his dancing skills to take breaths away and produces bangers that keep clubs flipping. He also draws beautifully.
5.
Kiss Daniel
He is the only one on this chart whose date of birth does not appear on his Wikipedia page but public opinion weighs in on him being 24 or thereabout, but clearly below 30. Kiss Daniel topped charts with his track Woju and now is new song Yeba is going places.
6.
Korede Bello
At 21 Korede is already a superstar and it will always be thanks to “GodWin” and his boyish looks with the trademark wink. The jerry-curl carrying musician is not yet even well into his twenties but he is as popular as any other musician on this list. Watch him in years to come.
7.
Lil Kesh
Keshinro Ololade was 19 when he took over the streets with Shoki and its trademark snake-handed dance step. Now at 22, he is clearly out of this world with his style that closely resembles that of Olamide and Reminisce. Lil Kesh has taken backstage in recent months after his album Y.A.G.I and leaving YBNL but he is expected to bounce back with something.
8.
Reekado Banks
Though looks can be dubious Reekado Banks is 22 and will be 23 on December 6. The musician and songwriter, has been piped to be the backbone of most of the lyrics of the songs from the record label, Mavin Records and he are always turning each track he is on into a beauty to listen to.
9.
Falz
The Bahd guy. You only need to hear a song and understand the power of his lyrics. The lawyer is 27 and his intelligence is heavily felt in his tracks. He passes vivid messages along with funny wordplay.
10.
Yung6ix
The voice of Warri! Yung6ix is the spotlight on the happenings in one of the most popular ‘streets’ of Nigeria and the rapper slays every time. He drops double-edged lyrics that cut with both sides and trickles the ear with fantastic wordplay.
