The African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has announced the suspension of the 2020 award because of COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the organisers of Africa’s biggest music award, AFRIMA, the 2020 edition will take place next year in 2021. This year’s award show would have been the 7th edition but the COVID-19 pandemic has stalled plans.
The African Union Commission (AUC) and the International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) say they have monitored the pandemic all year long. Thus, it informed their decision to move the award to 2021.
“The health and safety of the community of AFRIMA Stakeholders is of utmost importance to us. Many of our awards nominees and delegates travel from different parts of the continent and from other parts of the globe to Africa each edition. And fully understanding the risks involved with such movements, the suspension of the 2020 edition of AFRIMA is the only prudent course for us,” part of the official statement reads.

In addition, the organisers say that they will make future events even more memorable with the time they have on their hands. AFRIMA is usually a five-day affair; the award ceremony is just one aspect of the large gathering of celebrities and industry decision makers.
It is slightly disappointing that with all the time the organisers had; AFRIMA 2020 could not be held as an online event like many other events this year. We hope to see the award show return next year.
At the time of publishing this article, the date for AFRIMA in 2021 has not been announced. In addition, it is not clear if the 2020 and 2021 awards will merged or held separately. We can only authoritatively say that AFRIMA 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
