Burna Boy, born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, released “Outside” his third studio album, on the 26th of January 2018 after his coveted crossover cosign from Drake didn’t happen.
Drake had reportedly shared his vision for a “playlist” collecting sounds from around the world. The Afropop-dancehall hybridist, Burna Boy, ended up submitting five tracks for the project but only one, a song titled “More Life,” made the cut—and even then, it was relegated to a reverb-soaked outro to “Get It Together”, itself a rework of South African singer Bucie’s “Superman” featuring Durban house pioneer Black Coffee and Midlands R&B upstart Jorja Smith.
Burna Boy then recorded a mixtape titled “Outside” and finally gets a chance to show off his song in full. It’s the first track on the album as Burna Boy goes on to flaunt his own skills at musical synthesis.
Burna Boy is one of Nigeria’s preeminent musical ambassadors and even got nominated for a Grammy award with his album “African Giant“. His third studio album, “Outside”, is a perfect blend in mixing genres without making mud.
In February 2018, barely a month after its release, “Outside” debuted at number three on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and went on to win Album of the Year at the 2018 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Burna Boy showed he has mastered himself and his sound and it’s what made the album “Outside” a global success.
