Edinson Cavani scored a brace as Manchester United overturned a two-goal half-time deficit to deny Southampton at home.
Jan Bednarek headed in the opener before captain James Ward-Prowse turned in a second from a brilliant free-kick to beat David de Gea at the near post, sending the Saints into a 2-0 advantage at half-time.
United brought on Dean Henderson in place of the injured De Gea at the start of the second half, alongside Edinson Cavani who was on for Mason Greenwood, as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side tried to salvage something in the second half.
Cavani assisted Bruno Fernandes for United’s opener before heading in the equalizer on 74 minutes.
The Uruguayan striker was on target again in extra time as he headed in Marcus Rashford’s cross to secure a rare three points for United having been down at half-time.
There was time for even more drama as Cavani swooped in stoppage time to break Southampton hearts and rescue what looked an unlikely three points for United.
Victory takes Manchester United into the top half (7th) of the table, five points off second-placed Liverpool, with a game in hand.
Consequently, Southampton stay fifth on the log.
