Arsenal 2 – 1 West Ham United: Late Eddie Nketiah goal secures all three points for the Gunners; Plus other results

Arsenal vs West Ham United

Arsenal’s 100 percent record in the new Premier League campaign stays intact after Eddie Nketiah came off the bench to score a late winner in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over West Ham at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday Night.

The Hammers were a much-improved side compared to the one that lost to Newcastle on the opening day. They showed exactly what to expect from a London Derby producing, a display packed full of endeavour and energy to stifle the Gunners for large parts.

Arsenal’s lead came in the 25th minute against a run of play when Alexandre Lacazette headed a powerful shot past Fabianski from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cross. However, Michail Antonio restored parity on the stroke of half-time.

The Hammers were pretty much the better team after the restart and looked set to go on to win the game, but Nketiah struck with five minutes remaining to make it two wins from two for the Gunners and leave West Ham pointless.

Mikel Arteta after the match says “I am really happy with the three points, but we have a lot to analyse because there were a lot of issues we created for ourselves in many moments. We have to improve many things.

Yes [we got away with one], but we created many chances to win the game and we conceded too many chances that were our fault.

What I liked was the approach from the boys, they lifted up in the final 25 minutes, a few months we would have drawn or lost that game. In the end, you have to find a way because we are going to have games like this through the season.”

The match was incident-packed and it saw West Brom’s manager,  Slaven Bilic, and defender Kieran Gibbs both sent off at the end of the first half.

Grady Diangana ensured a bright start from the Baggies as he put the visitors ahead early inside the first 10 minutes but Calvert-Lewin netted soon afterwards to draw Everton level.

James Rodriguez off the back of an impressive debut for Everton last weekend continued on his first home outing, putting the hosts ahead just before half-time with a precise finish from outside the area. Mere seconds later, James was involved in an off the ball incident with Gibbs, who was shown a straight red card for lashing out at the Colombia midfielder and catching him in the face.

He was quickly followed by manager Bilic, who had confronted referee Mike Dean on the field at half-time to protest the sending off, but was soon shown red himself and watched the second half from the stands.

West Brom, however, looked like they might give it a good fight in the second half despite being a man down alongside losing their manager as Matheus Pereira curled home a beautiful free-kick.

But the Baggies were pegged back by a close-range strike from Michael Keane in the 54th minute while Dominic Calvert-Lewin completed his hattrick with two quickfire goals (62, 66) to take his tally to four goals in two Premier League games thus far.

Leeds United 4 – 3 Fulham

Leeds picked up their first Premier League victory in 16 years after edging out Fulham in a seven-goal thriller at Elland Road

Helder Costa scored the first of the game to put Leeds ahead in five minutes with a thumping finish at the back post before Aleksandar Mitrovic leveled from the spot shortly after the half-hour mark.

Mateusz Klich then restored Leeds’ advantage four minutes before the break with a coolly-taken penalty of his own and Patrick Bamford extended that lead in 50 minutes after a delightful Klich pass.

Leeds seem poised to cruise to victory after Helder Costa put them 4-1 up in 57 minutes, but Fulham fought back through Bobby Decordova Reid (62) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (67) to get close to grabbing a point in the game.

Both sides had opportunities to score in the closing stages but neither made them count as Leeds held on for three points.

Fulham are still in search of their first Premier League point of the season and sit 19th in the table, only above West Brom on goal difference, while Leeds move up to ninth with their win.
