What are you doing this weekend? No, don’t answer that. Let me suggest something instead. As usual, some fantastic films & TV shows are debuting today, and there’s something for everyone. Why not take a look at this list of 10 new releases and see if anyone suits you.
1. Cry Macho
“Cry Macho” is a 2021 Warner Bros American neo-Western drama film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood and adapted by Nick Schenk. It is based on the 1975 novel of the same name and stars Eastwood as Mike Milo, a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who, in 1979, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home from Mexico. Forced to take the backroads on their way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman finds unexpected connections and his own sense of redemption. “Cry Macho” tears up in cinemas worldwide today 17 September.
2. Copshop
“Copshop” is a 2021 American action thriller film directed by Joe Carnahan and written by Kurt McLeod and Carnahan. Screaming through the Nevada desert in a bullet-ridden car, wily con artist Teddy Murretto hatches a plan to hide out from lethal assassin Bob Viddick. He punches rookie officer Valerie Young to get himself arrested and locked up in a small-town police station. However, jail can’t protect Murretto for long as Viddick schemes his own way into detention, biding his time in a nearby cell until he can complete his mission. “Copshop” starts selling in theatres today.
3. Nightbooks
If indoor relaxation is your thing, here is something you can enjoy without stepping out. “Nightbooks” is a 2021 American dark fantasy film directed by David Yarovesky and written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis. In it, scary story fan Alex must tell a spine-tingling tale every night or stay trapped with his new friend in a wicked witch’s magical apartment forever. The film made its debut on Netflix on Wednesday, 15 September 2021.

4. Prisoners of the Ghostland
“Prisoners of the Ghostland” is a 2021 American neo-noir Western action film directed by Sion Sono. In the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town, a ruthless bank robber is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor, whose adopted granddaughter Bernice has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within five days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman—and his own path to redemption. It seems this week is one for gritty thrillers. Go into the cinema hall and fasten your imaginary seatbelts as “Prisoners of the Ghostland” breaks free on the big screen, starting today.
5. Blue Bayou
“Blue Bayou” is a 2021 American drama film written and directed by Justin Chon. It is a moving and timely story of a uniquely American family fighting for their future. Antonio LeBlanc, a Korean adoptee raised in a small town in the Louisiana bayou, is married to the love of his life, Kathy, and step-dad to their beloved daughter Jessie. Struggling to make a better life for his family, he must confront the ghosts of his past when he discovers that he could be deported from the only country he has ever called home. “Blue Bayou” debuts in cinemas today.
6. Sex Education (Season 3)
It is finally here! This one sits up there among the most anticipated series instalment in 2021. The high school-themed series won audiences hearts with its honest and bold approach to puberty and sexual consciousness. In its third season, word of the “sex school” gets out as a new headteacher tries to control a rambunctious student body and Otis attempts to hide his secret hookup. “Sex Education season 3” debuts on Netflix today, and it is a perfect binge material.

7. Lady of the Manor
Laugh away the week’s stress with this one. “Lady of the Manor” is a 2021 American comedy film written and directed by brothers Justin Long and Christian Long. Past and present collide in this supernaturally funny buddy comedy when stoner-slacker Hannah is hired to portray Lady Wadsworth, a Southern belle who died in 1875, in a tour at Wadsworth Manor. Hannah, a hot mess, figures she can fake it — until the ghost of Lady Wadsworth appears! Lady Wadsworth tells Hannah it’s time to change her wild ways — and she’ll haunt her until she does. The film makes its theatrical debut today.
8. The Eyes of Tammy Faye
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is a 2021 American biographical drama film based on the 2000 documentary of the same name by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. In the 1970s, Tammy Faye Bakker and her husband, Jim, rise from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park. Tammy Faye becomes legendary for her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. However, financial improprieties, scheming rivals and a scandal soon threaten to topple their carefully constructed empire.
9. Last Night in Rozzie
A New York lawyer (Neil Brown Jr.) returns to his Boston hometown to reunite his dying friend (Jeremy Sisto) with his estranged 10-year-old son. His journey forces him to confront a childhood trauma the two men have been hiding for years. The film stars the likes of Jeremy Sisto, Neil Brown Jr, Paris Scott Allen, Nicky Whelan, and Greyson Cage among others. It debuts in cinemas today.
10. I Love Us
When a man born into a crime syndicate falls madly in love with a single mother, the existence he’s never questioned collides with his hope to become a loving husband and father. After a life-altering event, it becomes evident that his life of corruption must come to an end, but there’s only one way out — a job that will free him from the syndicate and give his new family the life it deserves. “I Love Us” premieres in film theatres today 17 September.
