Trailer Thursday: Alter Ego, Lionheart, King of Boys and other Nigerian movies you need to watch NOW

Welcome to another episode of Trailer Thursday, where we bring you the best movie recommendations anywhere.

Today, we are turning our spotlight to our own Nollywood industry and showing off movies that you need to watch right now if you haven’t. If you have seen these movies, then you definitely need to watch them again.

Some of these movies are evergreen movies that made quite a splash when they were released while the others were understated masterpieces.

Check out the list of ten movies below as well as where you can stream them right now.

1. Alter Ego

Alter Ego is a 2017 Nigerian movie that tells the story of Ada Igwe (Omotola Jalade), a Nigerian lawyer who does her best to see sex offenders in jail. It stars Omotola Jalade, Wale Ojo, Jide Kosoko, Kunle Remi, and others.

Ada Igwe does not only rely on the law to exert punitive measures on offenders. She also uses orthodox methods to make sure those she finds guilty of child molestation and sex offences pay for their crimes.

Her quest for justice is influenced by her personal childhood experience as she was raped by her teacher in school. However, her drive to punish sex offenders is impeded by her high craving for sex.

2. Lionheart

Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart rocked Nollywood when it was first announced. It landed with a splash as it was announced by Netflix shortly after it was screened at a music festival.

The 2018 film was produced by Chinny Onwugbenu and directed by Genevieve Nnaji. Looking to prove her worth, Adaeze Obiagu (Genevieve Nnaji) steps up to the challenge to work with her crude and eccentric brother when her father, Chief Ernest Obiagu is forced to take a step back due to health issues.

3. Living in Bondage

Living in Bondage: Breaking Free is the remake of the 1992 movie Living in Bondage. The 2019 version stars Kenneth Okonkwo, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Enyinna Nwigwe, and Muna Abii, with Swanky JKA.

The film follows Nnamdi Okeke’s son who mentored by a mysterious tycoon, an ambitious young man faces a crisis when his rise to power draws him deep into the occult.

4. King of Boys

2018 movie, King of Boys is a Nigerian political thriller that is written, co-produced and directed by Kemi Adetiba. It stars Adesua Etomi, Sola Sobowale, Paul Sambo, Osas Ajibade, Toni Tones, Sani Muazu, Demola Adedoyin and Akin Lewis.

In King of Boys, a businesswoman and philanthropist with a shady past is drawn into a power struggle that threatens everything she holds dear.

5. The Wedding Party

The Wedding Party is a 2016 romantic comedy movie that is Kemi Adetiba’s first Directorial credit. This film also stars Adesua Etomi and Sola Sobowale.

Other cast members include Adesua Etomi, Banky Wellington, Richard Mofe Damijo, Sola Sobowale, Iretiola Doyle, Alibaba Akporobome, Zainab Balogun, Beverly Naya, and Somkele Iyamah.

The Wedding Party follows the wedding ceremony of 24-year-old Dunni Coker and IT entrepreneur, Dozie Onwuka as they go through the rituals of a hectic Nigerian wedding.

6. Isoken

Isoken is a 2017 romantic comedy written and directed by Jadesola Osiberu in her directorial debut. The film stars  Dakore Akande, Joseph Benjamin, and Marc Rhys.

Isoken revolves around the titular character, Isoken. Her family is worried about her because even though she appears to have a perfect life, she is unmarried.

7. 93 Days

93 Days is a 2016 Nigerian thriller drama that is directed and co-produced by Steve Gukas. The movie tells the story of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Nigeria and its subsequent successful containment by a health facility in Nigeria.

93 Days stars Bimbo Akintola, Danny Glover and Bimbo Manuel and is available on Netflix. Watch the trailer below:

8. Dinner

Dinner is a 2016 movie that narrates the events of the night when five friends gather for dinner. The story unfolds when they spend the whole night finding out each other’s deep dark secrets.

Dinner stars Ini Dima-Okojie, Kehinde Bankole, Iretiola Doyle, Enyinna Nwigwe, and Richard Mofe Damijo.

9. Fifty

Fifty is one of the most groundbreaking movies in Nigeria, following four women who are approaching the age of 50 as they try to come to terms with their age and the things that it comes with.

The 2015 movie produced by Tope Oshin stars Nse Ikpe-Etim, Ireti Doyle, Omoni Oboli and Dakore Akande.

10. 4th Republic

4th Republic follows Ikechukwu Obiano, a young idealistic deputy campaign manager for industrialist Mabel King, who is competing against incumbent Governor Idris Sani in her bid to become the first elected female governor in the country.

It was directed by Ishaya Bako and written by Ishaya Bako, Emil Garuba and Zainab Omaki. 4th Republic stars Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, Enyinna Nwigwe, Sani Muazu, Ihuoma Linda Ejiofor, and Bimbo Manuel.
