Marvel Studio has dropped a new 2021 official trailer for the upcoming superhero film Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle and others.
The new Black Widow trailer comes just three months before the film airs in cinemas and on Disney Plus on 9 July 2020. It shows new scenes that were not included in the first trailer that came out last March.
However, it does well to heighten the anticipation for the film’s release. Vulture highlights English actress Florence Pugh’s Russian accent that told part of the story in the two minute plus video.
Pugh plays Yelena Belova, a sister-figure to the main character Natasha Romanoff. She too was trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow just like Romanoff.
Director Cate Shortland explained that in the film, Romanoff would be “handing [Belova] the baton”, which would “propel another female storyline”. Belova’s character will be “unapologetic, and confident in herself, and curious … and emotionally brave”, Pugh said in an interview in 2020, which will highlight the difference between the two main characters.
Meanwhile, David Harbour will play the Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian character. In the film, he is a Russian super-soldier counterpart to Captain America and a father-figure to Romanoff and Belova. There is also a romantic side to Black Widow 2021.
It will feature O-T Fagbenle playing Rick Mason; an ally that Romanoff formed when she was with S.H.I.E.L.D. in the past. Mason has a romantic interest in the main character but also has the impeccable ability to find “people who aren’t so affiliated with armies”, Fagbenle said.
Other main casts include William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, the United States Secretary of State and a former U.S. Army general; Ray Winstone as Dreykov, the head of the Red Room; and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff / Black Widow, an experienced spy trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow and a mother-figure to Romanoff and Belova who is involved in a scientific experiment.
Additionally, Olivier Richters, a Dutch bodybuilder, actor, and model known for his imposing height of 218 cm and physique, has been cast for the film in an undisclosed role.
A Black Widow solo film has been in the works since 2004 (actress Johansson now, 36, would have been 20 at the time), but filming started in 2019. Pugh and most of the other main actors joined the cast in 2019 after the script was re-written.
The film was scheduled for release in May 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed back plans until it ended up getting a new date that is a year and two months later. Despite the delay, fans are eager to watch it.
