Stevie Wonder to headline Global Citizen Live concert in LA

Popular musician Stevie Wonder will headline Global Citizen Live’s star-studded 24-hour concert in Los Angeles this month.

The 25-time Grammy Award winner joins a list of music acts worldwide to perform during the 24-hour fundraising event on 25 September.

The concert is to help raise funds and awareness of poverty, climate change and the need for more access to COVID-19 vaccine doses worldwide.

When he was announced as the artist to headline the concert, he expressed his gratitude in a statement.

He said: “It is again my pleasure and honor to join with all of the artists who are using their gift of song to celebrate the Global Citizen event by doing our part in working against global warming, starvation, and singing for equality around the world. … We Are The Village!!!”

What makes Stevie Wonder a spectacular performer?

Stevie Wonder, whose real name is Stevland Hardaway Morris, is best known for his huge hits, “Superstition”, “Isn’t She Lovely” and “Happy Birthday”.

His career has been an extremely successful one, making him one of the most important persons in the music industry. He was born six weeks premature on 13 May 1950, and it’s been speculated that his blindness was caused by excessive oxygen exposure when he was placed in an incubator.

One thing that makes his music and live performances spectacular is that it is characterised by an unmistakable sense of joy and positivity, even when tackling serious social and racial issues.

What has he been up to recently?

In 2020, Stevie performed for the “One World: Together At Home” broadcast, curated by Lady Gaga, in support of healthcare workers on the frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic and the World Health Organisation.

He also released two songs in October 2020 for the first time in 15 years titled “Can’t Put It in the Hands of Fate”, featuring Rapsody, Cordae, Chika and Busta Rhymes and “Where Is Our Love Song”.
