American singers Lorde and Nicki Minaj have both pulled out of performing at the MTV VMAs, and it seems to be COVID related.
This year, MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) has been scheduled to take place at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday, 12 September 2021.
The evening of the show was supposed to see Lorde mark her triumphant return to the VMAs stage, four years after her “Homemade Dynamite” performance in 2017.
Sadly, Last week, MTV announced that Lorde would no longer be performing at this year’s Video Music Awards.
She wasn’t the only one who pulled out of performing at the show, as Nicki Minaj also revealed that she wouldn’t be on the performance lineup.
Why did Nicki Minaj pull out of VMAs?
Nicki made the revelation of her pulling out of performing on Twitter on Friday, 10 September 2021, when a fan tweeted asking if she would be performing at the award show.
She responded: “I just pulled out. I’ll explain why another day. But I love those guys at MTV. thank you Bruce. I love you so much. Next year we there baby.[sic]”
Although Nicki wasn’t originally slated to take stage performances, it seemed like MTV wanted her filling Lorde’s position.
Why did Lorde pull out of VMAs?
While Nicki is yet to explain why she pulled out from performing, Lorde recently opened up to her fans about her reasons.
According to the singer, it is due to COVID-19 protocols set in place for the event. The protocols put in place will not allow her to perform her song as she intended.
“We were planning this insanely amazing many-bodied intimate dance performance, not fully understanding the (very necessary!) safety protocols that are in place…I can’t make something less than outstanding for you guys,” she said.
