Jury verdict sparks widespread jubilation as Killer cop Derek Chauvin is found guilty of George Floyd’s death

The former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin, who pressed his knee on George Floyd‘s neck for over 9 minutes leading to the death of the African-American on May 25, 2020, has been charged with 2nd-degree murder after being found guilty by a jury giving rise to widespread jubilations in the streets of Minneapolis.

The anticipated verdict was eventually delivered after over 10 hours of deliberation by the jury. Chauvin was remanded in prison with immediate effect after the jury’s verdict and is set to be sentenced in eight weeks.

The killer cop’s bail was also revoked and he likely faces a long time in prison given that the maximum penalty for 2nd-degree unintentional murder is 40 years in the slammers.

He was also found guilty of 3rd-degree murder and 2nd-degree manslaughter by the jury, however, the 2nd-degree charge comes before all since it outweighs other charges.

Ben Crump, who represented the Floyd family tweeted confirming the defendant has been found guilty just minutes after the verdict was read. He also noted that the verdict marks a turning point in history while maintaining that justice has been served.

Crump also tweeted saying, “We thank AG Keith Ellison & his team, along with our legal team, for fierce dedication to justice. But it does not end here. We still have work to do! We must pass George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to hold police accountable & prevent unjustified killings of marginalized POC.”

The jury reached the decision after hearing from 38 prosecution witnesses, use-of-force experts who criticized Chauvin, the Minneapolis Police Chief as well as medical experts who pointed out that Floyd died as a result of pressure from Chauvin’s knee pressed against his neck for more than 9 minutes.

Chauvin was arrested to stand trial less than a week after a video of him kneeling on Floyd’s neck went viral online, and ultimately sparked nationwide protests and riots.

The ex-policeman claimed that Floyd allegedly died from drugs and a heart condition in his defense and not from his actions and his lawyers argued that Floyd “put drugs in his mouth” to hide them when the cops approached him, and the drugs heightened his heart condition thereby causing his death.

However, prosecutors claimed their argument was misleading and Floyd was killed by Chauvin’s knee which was pressed on Floyd’s neck for over 9 minutes as he struggled to breathe.

Many witnesses buttressed the prosecution’s theory as well as Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, who testified that Chauvin’s actions violated police regulations.

A couple of paramedics during the trial testified that Floyd’s heart had already stopped by the time they arrived on the scene and the ER doctor who pronounced his death at the hospital reported he believed one of the likely causes of his demise was oxygen deficiency.

This new ruling pleased many for justice’s sake and Floyd’s family also would feel lighthearted as they also got a $27 million wrongful death settlement from the City of Minneapolis.
