“Spiral: From the Book of Saw” is the ninth film out of the horror film franchise “Saw” and was released on 14 May 2021, see people’s reviews and reactions.
Siddhant Adlakha, for IGN, thinks that it failed in being fun while trying to be moralistic. “It is also, simply, not good enough on its own terms to qualify as a competent work of art,” the writer says.
However, many others, who have seen it, disagree with this take. Screenwriter and online film critic Duane Miller thought it was a lot of fun.
I thought #Spiral was a lot of fun! I love that we went back to the detective cat and mouse roots from the first movie. Chris Rock and Samuel L Jackson bring a great father and son dynamic and the callbacks to previous films were a nice touch. My favorite SAW film in a while! pic.twitter.com/TThvNUOaHF

Discussing Film, a pop culture blog had praises for the new “Saw” film. “Spiral is the rare sequel ‘SAW’ fans were hoping for, more cinematic and significant than past films,” it said in a tweet.
Someone else who does not like “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” described it as “someone’s fanfiction story” and “not as good as the originals”. Other negative reviews that the film got includes words like “underwhelming” and “flat”.
As the writer Josh Stolberg already said in a tweet, the new “Saw” film is very polarising and gives no middle ground. You either like it, or you hate it.
On the commercial side of things, the film made a total of $12 million worldwide within about two days of release. There is no concrete plan on ground as to the future of the “Spiral” franchise. Darren Lynn Bousman, “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” director, says that it should not be seen as the ninth in the Saw franchise. However, Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have already started working on the next one, “Saw X”, meaning the tenth in the series.
Per the various reviews, “Spiral” pays homage to the older films in the franchise while bringing a new direction. It tries to touch on morality but still pleasures fun-loving fans.
