2Baba (2Face) Biography: Music career

Early music career (1996)

During his time as a student of the Institute of Management & Technology, 2Baba was popular for his music on campus. He performed at shows and events that took place at the school and in other institutions like the University of Nigeria and Enugu State University of Science & Technology.

He also composed and sang jingles for GB Fan Club at Enugu State Broadcasting Services (ESBS) in 1996. Seeing that he had a shot at making it in the Nigerian music industry, Innocent Idibia quit school. Still, in 1996, he adopted the moniker 2Face, which was also stylised as TuFace. According to the singer, the name depicted him having two different personas, one for his personal life and one for his music.

At IMT in Enugu State, TuFace started singing with a rapper known as BlackFace or BlackFace Naija. BlackFace’s real name is Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo and he was born in Benue State. He and 2Face were old friends and had met during their secondary school days in Benue State. In 1996, they formed the hip hop and R&B music group called Plantashun Boiz.

Plantashun Boiz (2000 – 2004)

To pursue his music full-time, 2Face Idibia (as he was known then) moved to Lagos State with BlackFace Naija. The duo also met another musician Chibuzor Oji. Oji had used the stage name Lyrical Orge before he joined Plantashun Boiz. However, to give the group a unifying appearance, he changed his stage name to Faze. The Plantanshun Boiz were under the management of Owoyemi Akinwale Nathaniel (Natz), Ifeanyi Oji (Odogwu) and Obasi Leonard (Baba Leo).

Blackface, 2face and Faze

In 2000, Plantashun Boiz met with Tony Tetuila who at the time was a major force in the Nigerian music industry. Their meeting gave them the needed exposure and they went on to release their debut album titled “Body and Soul” in 2000. Their second album titled “Sold Out” was released in 2003.

However, the group was short-lived. In 2004, 2Face Idibia wanted a solo career and left Plantashun Boiz. This did not go down well with BlackFace and Faze. We will provide more details about the disagreement that ensued due to 2Face leaving Plantashun Boiz in the Controversies section below.

Face 2 Face (2004)

TuFace released his debut album “Face 2 Face” in 2004 as a solo singer under Kennis Music. It attained major commercial success and sold about 2 million copies. Its success even spread beyond Nigeria to as far as South Africa and Europe.

Its lead single “African Queen” became one the biggest Nigerian songs ever and is considered an all-time classic. The single was used in the soundtrack for the 2006 American romantic comedy film Phat Girlz, which was released internationally.

“Face 2 Face” contains 11 tracks, two of which were short skits. It features other popular songs like “U No Holy Pass”, “Ole (Thief)” and “Nfana Ibaga (No Problem)”. Freestyle, Natives & Lil Seal, and Blackface were the only artists credited with features on the album.

The album has a South African version that was released in January 2006 by the transnational EMI record label. While it contains the same tracklist as the original version, six of the tracks are remixes and newly remastered versions of some of the songs.

Grass 2 Grace (2006)

Innocent Ujah ‘2Face’ Idibia released his sophomore album as a solo artist in December 2006. The project titled “Grass 2 Grace” was released under Kennis Music. The album was supported by popular singles such as “No Shaking”, “See Me So” and “4 Instance”. It remains one of the most popular albums in Nigeria music circles and won him the 2007 MOBO awards.

To break the national barrier, 2Face featured the Ghanaian singing group VIP on one of the tracks titled “My Love”. It worked as the song went on to become a big hit across Africa. The “Grass 2 Grace” album itself houses 13 tracks, three of which were skits. “E B Like Say”, “If Love Is A Crime” and “One Love” were also big songs. Soul E was the only other artist featured on the album.

Hypertek Digital (2006)

After he released “Grass 2 Grace”, 2face Idibia left Kennis Music, a record label owned by Kehinde “Kenny” Ogungbe and Dayo “D1” Adeneye. Kennis Music was at one time the biggest record label in Nigeria and had several notable artists under them such as Sound Sultan, Kenny Saint Brown, eLDee, Sir Sina Peters, Jaywon, OJB Jezreel, Tony Tetuila and many more.

“Enter The Place” is the only pre-released song from the album and it was the album’s lead single. 2Face featured longtime friend and fellow singer Sound Sultan on the song.

He also featured several other artists like Cartier, Melissa Briggs, Chaka Demus, Pliers, Natz, R. Kelly, Sway and Wyre. His daughter, Ehi Idibia also featured with him on the song titled “Free”.

The 18-track album received overwhelmingly negative reviews and failed to reach the level of commercial success that his past albums achieved. However, there are some notable songs on the album such as “I Sing” that did quite well.

The Unstoppable International Edition (2010)

On 27th June 2010, TuFace released his fourth studio album titled “The Unstoppable International Edition”. This was the international edition of his third album. However, it brought new songs including two new singles titled “Implication” and “Only Me”.

Both singles became chart-topping songs and got lots of airplay on the radio. He also dropped videos for “Implication” and “Only Me”.

“Rain Drops”, “Be There”, “Emotions” and “Power of Naija” were the other new songs that 2Face dropped with the international edition of The Unstoppable. He featured M.I Abaga on the remix of “Be There” while Cobhams and Omawunmi joined him on the “Power of Naija” track.

The “Unstoppable International Edition” album won two awards at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards and the Best R&B/Pop Album awards at The Headies 2011.

I’m Feeling Good (2011)

Amidst rumours of a possible beef between 2face and fellow Nigerian veteran musician D’banj, the duo released a chart-topping single titled “I’m Feeling Good”. It was a positively released single that put to rest any rumour about bad blood between.

Away and Beyond (2012)

2Face Idibia dropped his fifth studio album, “Away and Beyond” in 2012 under Hypertek Digital. The album contains 15 tracks. It features Huma Lara, Terry Tha Rapman, Dammy Krane, Rocksteady, Becca and Naeto C. Production credits go to Femi Ojetunde, J.Sleek, Arsonal, Spells, Clutchie and Kiki Banson.

“Away and Beyond” enjoyed lots of positive reviews with critics praising its versatility that touches on several genres like R&B, Reggae, Dancehall, Pop and Soul. “Ihe Neme” is one of the singles that the album produced. It has other notable tracks such as “Rainbow”, “Higher Healing”, “Dance In The Rain” and “Dance Floor”.

A TooXclusive review describes “Away and Beyond” as a rich, matured, soothing, spicy, adventurous and solidly produced album. Another review by Nigerian Sounds piece says: “Delivery check, Production check, Lyrical content check, Collaborations check, Subject matter check. Timeless music that cannot be labelled is what I call this.”

2Face released a remix of “Rainbow” with American superstar T-Pain in 2013.

The Ascension (2014)

“The Ascension” is 2face Idibia’s sixth studio album and his fourth under his Hypertek Digital record label, a collaborative project that was supported by 960 Music Group (the owners of Kennis Music). The Ascension features guest appearances from Machel Montano, Vector, Bridget Kelly, Rocksteady, Dammy Krane, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Iceberg Slim, Kim Almarcha, Shurwayne Winchester, Tony Oneweek and Fally Ipupa.

The Ascension debuted at number 12 on the Billboard World Albums chart, making 2face the first Nigerian artist to achieve this feat.

2face Idibia changes name to 2Baba (2016)

In 2016, 2Face Idibia officially changed his stage name to 2Baba. The new name – 2Baba – started appearing as his credit on songs while 2Face was left out. Initially, it seemed that it was a nickname and in recognition of his longevity in the Nigerian music industry.

However, during a music trip to Kenya, the legendary singer explained why he changed a name he had used for over 16 years. According to an MTV Base news article, 2Baba said:

“I love kids. In case you are not aware I am a happily married man and a father of many children from various baby mamas something I often regret. Although I always wished it differently, life must go on and the fact that they are my children makes me a proud baba. And despite all said and done marriage has made me more responsible and mature.”

While he did not explicitly say so, it appears the ‘Baba’ in his name is in respect to his fatherhood status.

Coded Tinz (2016), Gaga Shuffle (2017), and Amaka (2018)

In anticipation of a seventh studio album, 2Baba released a new single in 2016 titled “Coded Tinz”. The veteran Nigerian star featured indigenous rapper Phyno and comedian Chief Obi. The single is a dancehall track that was produced by Sarz.

2Baba, as 2Face or 2Face Idibia now prefers to be known, dropped another smashing hot single titled “Gaga Shuffle” in 2017. A Pulse writer named Jonathan claims that the song was recorded within 30 minutes and had happened when 2Baba and Larry Gaga stumbled on Dapiano playing around with the beat.

In 2018, Innocent Idibia (2Baba’s real name) released “Amaka” featuring DMW’s Peruzzi. It did not take long for people to start grooving to the song, which topped Nigerian music charts for weeks.

In June 2020, 2Baba held an online streaming party for his Warriors album. It did not get the expected outcome as it has only about 7.9K views as of 9th December 2020.

The critical reviews of Warriors were negative with many saying that 2Baba got lax on the album and had relied more on featured artists to carry the project. He later released “Opo” (with Wizkid) and “Target You” (with Syemca) as singles with their music videos as well.

2Baba (2Face) Biography: Advocacy

In addition to philanthropy, 2Baba also feels strongly about patriotism and advocacy. One example was when he announced via his Instagram page that he would lead a protest in Nigeria on 5th February 2017.

The protest was to be against “obnoxious policies” and “excuses and mistakes” of the Buhari government, as the singer said. He further wrote:

“A call for good governance. A call for urgent explanation into the reckless economic downturn nationwide. A call for nationwide protests as we say no to the Executive, no to legislatures, no to judiciary… You have all failed us.

“We the people are tired. We can no longer continue with all of you. All your excuses and mistakes are not funny. We do not wish to continue with a system and government that is not working but afflicting the people.

“We the people of this country not living under the privileges of government allowances and remuneration have now accepted to take the bull by the horn to come out and protest these obnoxious and baseless policies and excuses of the government of the day.

“There’s a need for Nigerians to rise against what is happening in this country having waited patiently for the legislatures that were elected to represent the people all to no avail.”

In response, the Lagos state police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, released a statement that the protest was banned in the state. Owoseni mentioned that hoodlums would hijack it and use the protest to cause havoc.

On 4th February 2017, a day before the planned protest, 2Baba announced that he has cancelled it. According to him, the cancellation was due to security reasons. However, there were rumours that the Nigerian government had arrested him using the DSS and forced him to cancel the protest. However, 2Baba denied this.

Also, in October 2020, during the EndSARS protest, 2Baba was very vocal about his support for the movement. He later tweeted that he is disappointed that not everyone was involved in the protest. He wrote on Twitter:

“I wonder why everybody is still going to work. We need a total shutdown until these politicians start to answer!! Unless them wan use sars come pursue us go work #EndSARS #EndPoliceBrutality #endimpunity #endlooting Make only market for essential things dey.”

2Baba (2Face) Biography: Controversies

2Face, as 2Baba was previously known, had left Plantashun Boiz in a storm of disagreement. The other members of the group had wanted him to stay but the African Queen Crooner wanted to strike out alone. After months of speculations and rumours of disagreement, he eventually left and the group collapsed.

Since then, Ahmedu Obiabo popularly called Blackface, the singer who 2Face had started the group with and a former longtime friend, has been holding grudges against 2Baba. He frequently accuses 2Baba of performing and releasing songs that they recorded together. He also claims that 2Baba used his influence to blacklist him.

One of his most popular allegations was that he and 2Face had written the classic song “African Queen” together. In 2019, BlackFace went as far as releasing his own version of the song.

Blackface also released a diss track in March 2019 titled “War” in which he name-dropped 2Face. Some of his lyrics include claiming to have taught 2Face to sing, threatening him with physical harm and even hinting that he is gay.

2Baba responded that BlackFace’s claimed of song theft and blacklisting were “unfounded” and “malicious“. He mentioned that Ahmedu Obiabo was trying to use his name to gain publicity for his upcoming releases.

Additionally, in the statement released by Now Muzik, the management company in charge of 2Baba’s works, the two parties met in court over claims of character defamation.

Later, in November 2019, BlackFace apologised to 2Baba and the duo settled out of court, according to a report we wrote back then. Yet, in 2020 BlackFace released a music video for his own version of African Queen.

Final thoughts …

Innocent Ujah Idibia has made a revered name for himself in the Nigerian music industry. He is not only one of the all-time greats but also one of those that is comfortable making the music they want and not bothered about keeping up with the times.

While he has changed his stage name several times over the years (from 2Face to TuFace to 2Face Idibia and more recently, 2Baba), he has not changed his legendary status.

Another thing people admire about 2Baba is his humility. He praises younger artists without trying to draw comparisons between them and himself. As revealed, he is also generous, kind and genuinely interested in making the world a better place.

He is one of the most loved Nigerian musicians. It is not easy to be in the showbiz industry for 20 years and more and not piss off some people. Somehow, if 2Baba has haters, they do not reveal it. It seems like every Nigerian music lover is a fan of this legend.
