Saudi Arabia says it will issue tourist visas to 49 countries to visit the ultra-conservative Muslim country but religious of Medina and Mecca remain banned.
According to Aljazeera, alcohol remains banned although female tourists need not wear all-covering black robes or abayas nor be required to be accompanied by men. But modesty is mandated even at the beaches.
An official announcement is expected to be Friday.
The move is targeted to bring in about 10% of the country’s GDP by 2030.
Prior now, only resident workers and their dependents, business travellers, and Muslim pilgrims who are given special visas to visit Mecca and Medina were allowed to come into the country.
“Opening Saudi Arabia to international tourists is a historic moment for our country,” tourism chief Ahmed al-Khateeb says in a statement.
“Visitors will be surprised… by the treasures we have to share — five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a vibrant local culture and breathtaking natural beauty.”
