Dr. Sani Aliyu stated shocking statistics that show that a number of people as large as 200,000 live with HIV.
Dr. Aliyu, who is the Director-General for National Agency for the Control of AIDS also revealed that of the number, only 16,000 are receiving treatment for the disease and he lamented the gap between people with the disease and those who don’t. He mentioned that at least 50 people contact the disease on a daily basis in the state. This comes as a surprise to the world at large because HIV and AIDS awareness have been going on for some time and people should be more aware of ways to protect themselves and their partners.
On his meeting with the Governor who was represented by Chief Moses Adeyemo, Dr. Aliyu also said that five percent of the current 1,060,000 people with HIV in Nigeria are on treatment courtesy of the Government while the larger percent are on treatment sponsored by international bodies.
The statistics proved to be an eye opener as Chief Moses speaking for Governor Ajimobi assured those present that the administration will support the NACA with both finance and human capital towards bringing the number of affected people down.
