The Special Anti-Robbery Squad has been in the news for some time in the past few days for unethical behaviors but they proved their worth in Calabar against some notorious suspected kidnappers.
After the Police command of Cross River State got information about the kidnap of a certain woman, the operation was handed to the SARS operatives who swung into action immediately and soon got the suspects in their radar but laid low, using intelligence gathering to determine the best time to pounce on the gang. The time came today after four days of being on their trail as they found them in Ikom Local Government, where they had a hideout in one of the bushes surrounding the area.
The encounter involved exchange of gunfire that left five of the suspects dead and two in the custody of the Police while the victim was rescued successfully.
ASP Irene Ugbo, the spokesperson of the Police spoke to reporters from PUNCH on the phone saying:
“Our men today had an encounter with some suspected kidnappers in Ikom local government area while trying to rescue an abducted woman in their captivity. During the process of rescuing the victim, the suspects engaged our men in an exchange of fire and we were able to rescue the woman while five of the suspected kidnappers were shot dead. We also arrested two of the suspects and our men are bringing them down to Calabar as we speak.”
