Needless to say, the barbaric acts of many uniformed armed personnel is becoming worrisome as almost no day goes by without the media getting wind of some sort of violence against helpless civilians for no just cause.
The Guardian reports about the court judgment held in the Federal High Court in Calabar Yesterday that placed an order on the Nigerian Navy to pay a sum of N75m to a bricklayer, Mr. Etim Asuquo Akpan, who is a native of Akwa Ibom State.
Etim who was living in Cross River state had one day encountered men attached to the Cross River Government who were part of the then Quick Intervention Squad. And without provocation from him, one of them shot him between his legs and then they all fled, leaving him for dead in a pool of his blood. He was saved by a nearby church whose members rushed him to the State’s teaching hospital, but the Navy men were not done. On discovering his whereabouts, they stormed the hospital and chained him to the bed and repeatedly tortured him for months until he was released.
He had first charged the authorities to court in 2013 and he is happy he finally got the justice that he deserved. Justice Iyang Ekwo had condemned the act of abusing the rights of civilians because of having a position of authority while passing his judgment and reflected that the money should go a long way in helping the 39 year old family man in caring for some of his responsibilities.
