The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has agreed to call the protracted strike action off after the Nigerian government agreed to pay N70 billion to the lecturers in the latest rounds of negotiations.
Based on the positive outcome of the meeting on Friday 20th November 2020 between the striking body and the government representatives; the strike has come to an end after eight long months.
According to ASUU, they are calling off the strike because the Federal Government offered to pay the lecturers N70 billion. Recall that the lecturers had demanded N110 billion for revitalisation and the government had pledged N35 billion earlier.

Now, it has doubled it offer. In addition to the N70 billion, the government agreed to settle the arrears of salaries of the lecturers before 31st December 2020.
However, ASUU still has to reach out to its organs and then give the government feedback. After this, ASUU will decide the exact date to call off the strike and when academic activities will officially resume on campus.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige presided over the strike-ending meeting in Abuja.
