In Rajasthan, India, the group of farmers living there have dug up holes and partly buried themselves in protest of the government’s plan to seize their land.
The leader of the protest, Nagender Shekawat told Aljazeera reporters that the land acquisition plan would negatively affect almost 5,000 families who are dependent on it.
The land was as large as 540 acres and the government issued the plan in 2010, stating that it is to be used for housing projects.
They protest the compensation that they claim is not enough and does not follow the new Land Acquisition Act which requires that 80% of the residents must consent before any land acquisition can go on.
Raj Kumar who is Deputy Commissioner of JDA stated that the deal had been finalized in 2013 after proper compensations and that the agitators were fired by people with ‘vested interests’ in the land and not even the real farmers.
Talks were to be held this evening between the Farmers’ representatives and the JDA along with the State Government.
