Kano Hisbah corps destroy 1,975,000 bottles of beer worth over NGN 200 million confiscated within Kano metropolis.
The Kano State Hisbah Corps is a religious police force established by the state’s government in 2003 with the institutionalisation of formerly local and privately maintained Hisbah security units.
Hisbah, which is an Arabic word meaning an act performed for the good of the society, is an Islamic religious concept that calls for “enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong on every Muslim.
According to reports from reputable news houses in Nigeria, the governor of Kano State, Abdulahi Umar Ganduje, ordered the destruction of more than 1,975,000 bottles of beer, which was carried out by Hibah Corps. The wreckage was estimated to be worth over 200 million Naira.
Recall that over the past week, their reaction to the stunning pictures of Nigerian-born actress Rahama Sadau’s bareback had been the talk of the town. The police have allegedly invited the actress, and she has been blocked from travelling out of the country as well as been charged for blasphemy.
Now, it is the action of the Islamic police and a northern governor that was trending online on Monday, 9 November 2020.
At an event spearheaded by Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the deputy governor of Kano State, the state’s Hisbah Board destroyed over 1,975,000 bottles of beer that they had confiscated.
The deputy governor representing the governor spoke at the event stating that consuming any alcoholic beverage or intoxicating substance that affected a person’s mental capability has been banned in Kano State. This is because the act is forbidden in Islam, and Kano State operates under the tenet of the religion.
A statement obtained from Governor Ganduje’s office reveals that he plans to enhance the Hisbah Board’s effort during his Administration by increasing members’ salaries and giving them new uniforms.
Reacting to this, social media users condemned the act because the state still benefits from value-added tax (VAT) generated from alcohol sales. Some also called the northern part of Nigeria “a den of hypocrites” because they consume the most
intoxicating substances and abuse drugs.
Others actually commended the destruction of alcohol and praised both the Kano State government and the Hisbah Board for their ‘Islam-like’ actions. See various reactions below:
May Allah bless Kano State Hisbah for this wonderful and great job, beer should not be allowed in any human society, especially a place like Kano, keep up the good work. ?? pic.twitter.com/BNzSzKKDw1

Hisbah is anti technology & anti development. I don’t see any difference between Hisbah and Boko Haram.

Igbo land is the only region in the world were native Muslim population is less than 0.05%. This is one reasons why Igbos are skeptical about Islam. Nigeria is a secular state, but look at this intolerant in display from Arewa Hisbah police. Even Arabs do not do things anymore https://t.co/FYROufK8UR

Nigeria is not Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan. Northern Nigeria is not under the control of the Taliban.
Are we running one country, two systems, like in China and Hong Kong? The Constitution states that there shall be only one police – Nigeria Police Force. What is Hisbah Police?
