Nigerians woke up to the new year, 1 January 2021, to see #FreeSowore trending, here is why this hashtag is getting more popular.
Sahara Reporters claims that Omoyele Sowore and a number of other Nigerian political activists were brutalised and arrested on new year’s eve. According to the report, the arrest may be because of a crossover procession to mark the new year.
Eyewitnesses say about seven vans loaded with security operatives descended on the activists at Gudu junction, Abuja.
There are rumours that Sowore got injured during the raid, this is why #FreeSowore is trending online. Sources claim that the arrested activists are at Abattoir police station; a notorious joint for the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Besides Sowore, there are also Sanyaolu Juwon, Michael and two other unnamed persons. For now, the police has not confirmed the incident and Sowore is unavailable.
However, before his arrest, the political activist has been tweeting about #CrossOverWithProtest. He wrote that it was taking place simultaneously in Ondo, Kaduna, and Abuja.
Sowore’s call for the protest reads: “How about a CrossOver Protest/Uprising tonight? Anyone willing to participate? Pick up a candle and a placard showing your grievances against the regime, let’s upload our short videos and photos across our SOcial Media platforms. Let’s welcome the regime to a RESOLUTE 2021!”
