In a tweet, Speaker of Nigeria’s 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has confirmed that his security detail killed newspaper vendor in Abuja on 19th November 2020.
Femi Gbajabiamila tweeted in the evening of 19th November 2020, after he left the national assembly, he had stopped ‘as usual’ to exchange pleasantries with the newspaper vendors at the corner.
However, when his convoy wanted to continue its journey, ‘unidentified men’ blocked it. Then, to disperse them, men in his security detail shot in the air.
“Some hours later, after getting to our destination, it was brought to my attention that someone was hit by a stray bullet, contrary to an earlier report by men in the convoy that they applied their security discretion to shoot in the air,” Femi Gbajabiamila wrote.

He said he was ‘personally distraught’ over the incidence and extends his deepest sympathies to; the victim, his family and Abuja vendors.
The victim has been identified as Ifeanyi and Gbajabiamila says the officer who ‘fired the fatal shot’ has been suspended. In addition, he has ordered a report at the local police station and an investigation.
“My value for human life and my respect for all people – irrespective of social economic status – is what endeared me to these vendors and these are the reasons why I stop my convoy quite often to connect with them,” the politician further said.
This incident has irked many Nigerian social media users. Recall that today marks one month after the Lekki toll gate massacre occurred. There have been several angry responses to the Speaker’s tweet.
