Egypt’s Health Ministry spokesperson, Khaled Mugahed shared the news while stating that the victim is a foreigner who did not show any serious symptoms.
The case was quickly detected thanks to a follow-up programme implemented by the government for travellers coming from countries where the virus has spread, according to Al Jazeera.
The statement from the ministry of health specified that the victim is in isolation and undergoing treatment, but did not specify their nationality or where they came from.
This case makes Egypt the first African country with a confirmed case of Coronavirus after Ivory Coast and Botswana reported suspected cases.
The virus has spread to over 24 countries worldwide, with almost 65,000 confirmed cases and has killed over 1400 people worldwide.
It was recently renamed to Covid-19 by the WHO in an attempt to distinguish it from other Coronavirus diseases as well as to prevent stigma towards China where it first originated from.
