President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina has trended on Twitter after he posted a tweet defending former Nigeria Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
During the recent UK parliament debate concerning EndSARS and possible sanctions against the Nigerian government; members of the parliament made some damning allegations against some Nigerian politicians.
One of them is that General Gowon stole about half the funds in the Central Bank of Nigeria and hid it in the UK. Here is a short video of the claim:
How am I just hearing this for the first time?! ??.
A UK Parliament member just revealed that General Gowon, during his time, carted away with HALF OF CBN!! Bruh, HALF OF CBN ??!!! pic.twitter.com/cygw5XOGlh— Niklaus ? (@LifeOfChika) November 23, 2020

The statement did not sit well with some Nigerians and notable among them is Akinwumi Adesina. In a tweet he said:
Be careful of misinformation! H.E. General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, is a man of great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity. I know him. A great and admirable elder statesman of Nigeria. His honesty and integrity are impeccable. pic.twitter.com/YznYN873qH

However, Adesina defence of Gowon was met with stiff resistance from many other Nigerians. See some of the comments below:
I wish you hadn’t made this tweet. The General has enough resources to publicly refute the allegation and even sue the MP if he’s being accused falsely. It’s going to 72hours and not a word from him?
This tweet shouldn’t come from you, sir.

For someone who didn’t say anything about #LekkiMassacre, why would I take you seriously?
This same Gowon killed over 3 million people and you use those words for him? Wow… I’m from Delta state, and 700 innocent men were slaughtered in one day in Asaba. This is wickedness

A man with great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity killed 3 million Nigerians. A man who couldn’t honour aburi accord instead he killed 3 million Nigerians. Sir, please with all due respect go and sleep we know our history.

Trash really.
This man just took stray dragging for Gowon
He may not be a thief but he is no Saint. Also, who even trusts history now after seeing how the government acts in the face of evidence?
Good
