5 Black hair myth to be broken

Hair is important to most women, and sometimes, our hair can affect our mood and confidence.

Black hair has its own vocabulary different from other races. It bonds millions of black women together in style, success and struggle.

Often times, we think we know a lot about our hair, but there are tons of fake news about what makes your black hair healthier, longer and stronger.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the 5 most common misconceptions about your hair. You may be surprised by what you find!

1. Dry scalp and dandruff are the same

You know that moment when you get to the salon and the stylist looks at you like you are dirty and says: “aunty! You get plenty dandruff, see white something coming out of your hair,” then she starts recommending hair products in her salon to battle the supposed dandruff. Well, this is that myth.

Dandruff and dry scalp are 2 different hair condition. Dandruff is actually caused by an overproduction of sebum – our skin’s natural oil. It’s greasy and has a yellowish or white colour. Flakes from dandruff tend to be larger than dry scalp flakes.

If you have dandruff, you may experience some itching and scalp odour. This is a medical condition you should visit your dermatologist about. Dry scalp, on the other hand, is caused by a lack of moisture on the scalp.

Dry scalp doesn’t always result in flakes, but when it does, they are usually small and white. At times itching can be involved also.

2. Trimming your hair will make your hair grow

Trimming your ends does not make your hair grow but does promote healthy hair by getting rid of split ends. The way to a long hair is not by cutting it but how you take care of it.

The rate at which your hair grows is dependent on hair products, diet and genetics not on how often you trim your hair, trims don’t allow you to retain length. Don’t stop getting them just because they are not making your hair grow any faster.

3. Colouring your hair will only damage it

Black hair

There’s a half-truth behind this myth. It has been recorded in medical journals that people who have used strong dyes have actually burned their scalp.

So it totally depends on the chemical, the dye, and the manufacturer you’re using. In other words, every scalp is unique, so results will vary.

Get dyes that suit our hair type and scalp. And voila! You are rocking a different hair colour without any qualms.

4. The slightest bit of heat will fry your hair

I know, too much heat can damage your hair by making it weak, but straightening your hair once in a while at a safe heat setting will not damage your hair.

Just make sure to use a heat protect if you are going to apply heat directly to your hair.

5. It doesn’t grow

black hair

The myth of black lacking the ability to grow is a misconception that is found to be very disrespectful.

This myth is the reason why people think it is okay to ask “is that your real hair?” Black hair does grow just like everyone else’s. Do not be fooled by the shrinkage because what looks like a teeny fro can be 12 inches once straightened. Yes, black hair can shrink up to like three times its straight length.

You may not be able to see the results as quickly as a person with straighter hair because your hair shrinks up. Hair grows about a half inch per month, so it is growing.

The length of your hair depends on how well you take care of it. If you carry your hair without proper care, then you should not expect it to grow. You may not even be able to retain the length because you are not taking proper care of your hair.
