Death by strangulation is one that is caused due to tightening of the neck which in turn causes direct closure of the airways. Many persons have lost their lives this way. Learn about Gabby Petito, Todd Craven, and others who died from strangulation.
Gabby Petito
According to reports from a Memo which was dated 5 October 2021 but released on Tuesday, 12 October 2021, Gabby Petito died by “manual strangulation” at least three weeks before her body was found on 19 September 2021.

The memo, which was released by Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue, cited Petito’s death as “death by manual strangulation/throttling.” Speaking with reporters, Blue ignored questions relating to who might have been responsible for the 22-year old’s death, however, he implied that her death was a result of domestic violence.
He said: “Our initial determination is the body was in the wilderness for three to four weeks before she was found which will place her time of death in mid to late August.”
“This is only one of many deaths around the country of people who are involved in domestic violence and it’s unfortunate that these other deaths do not get as much coverage as this one”
Laundrie’s family attorney, Steven Bertolino stated clearly in a statement on Tuesday, 12 October 2021 that Brian Laundrie is not a suspect in Petito’s disappearance or death. The statement reads:
“Gabby Petito’s death at such a young age is a tragedy. While Brian Laundrie is currently charged with the unauthorized use of a debit card belonging to Gabby, Brian is only considered a person of interest in relation to Gabby Petito’s demise. At this time Brian is still missing, and when he is located we will address the pending fraud charge against him.”
Todd Craven
According to deputies, Todd Craven was found dead about 9 p.m. on the night of 5 September 2021 near Irby Road in Piedmont.
Anderson County Coroner said he had died of traumatic injuries, however, they did not release the exact cause of his death at the time his death was announced.
On Tuesday, 12 October 2021 Anderson County Sheriff’s Office filed a report and charged William Calvin Black Jr., 36, with murder, according to a warrant.
The report revealed that Craven was “choked/strangled,” and the methods used were “strangulation/hanging.”
Aftab Ahmed
Aftab Ahmed is a veteran photojournalist who was found dead in his apartment after he was strangled to death in 2013.
According to the police reports, his body was found with his hands and legs tied up and a gag wrapped around his mouth.
Dhaka Medical College morgue concluded his death was caused by strangulation in the post-mortem report.
Speaking about his death, the DMP Joint Commissioner said: “Theft or robbery incident might have led to the murder as his bed was found destabilized and his hands and legs were bound by ropes”
The 80-year-old journalist was living with his driver and his help who discovered that something was wrong. In March 2017, five persons were sentenced to death for his murder.
Stacey Michelle
Stacey Mitchell was strangled at the age of 17 with a dog chain tied around her neck. Michelle was born in Dorset, England, and emigrated to Australia at the age of 10.
At 16, she ran away from her family home to stay with 19-year-old Parashumti and 21-year-old Stasinowsky.
Stasinowsky accused her partner, Parashumti, of flirting with Stacey Michelle, and to prove that she didn’t have feelings for her, Parashumti plotted to kill Michelle.
On the evening of Stacey’s death, the three of them spent the evening drinking whisky before Parashumti hit Mitchell over the back of her head with a concrete block.
Stasinowsky then strangled her with a dog chain. The both of them made out over Stacey’s dying body while recording her over their phones.
During the trial, both women seemed unbothered as they kept smiling and whispering to themselves. They both pleaded guilty and were sentenced in 2018 to strict security life imprisonment with a minimum of a 24-year term.
Cynthia Udoka Osokogu
Cynthia Osokogu was lured from Nasarawa to Lagos state and the before strangling her in a hotel in Festac Town in 2012. The 25-year-old was lured to Lagos by Mr. Nwanbufor, 37, whom she met on Facebook.
After she arrived in Lagos, she was lodged in the hotel where she was drugged, chained, and gagged with a sellotape. Her hands were also tied behind her back with the sellotape.
According to the court, Mr. Nwanbufor drugged and murdered Cynthia in Cosmilla Hotel, Lakeview Estate, Festac Town with the assistance of his nephew, Mr. Ezike, 27.
After their arrest, they made a confessional statement, and while in court, they pleaded not guilty and wanted to withdraw their statement, claiming that they were made under duress.
The court admitted the statements stating that they were corroborated by the testimonies of the witnesses and the evidence provided by the police.
