Facebook has banned former US President Donald Trump from the app till 2023. The social media giant first issued an indefinite ban to Trump in January 2021. They now say they will revisit the ban in 2023 and reinstate his account only if the threats his conducts poses have receded.
Trump got banned from Facebook in January right after the attack on the US Capitol by a mob of his supporters. He, however, recently appealed his ban to the Oversight Board, an appeal group funded by Facebook. The board upheld his ban but said the guidelines for it were too vague.
The group, which consists of 20 members made up of journalists, academics, nonprofit leaders, and also Denmark’s former prime minister, made a ruling that prompted Facebook’s latest decision on the matter.

In a post made by the company’s spokesperson, it said, “We are today announcing new enforcement protocols to be applied in exceptional cases such as this, and we are confirming the time-bound penalty consistent with those protocols which we are applying to [Mr] Trump’s accounts.”
“Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to [Mr] Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols. We are suspending his accounts for two years, effective from the date of the initial suspension on January 7 this year,” the post continued.
Facebook also says that they will have experts access the situation at the end of the 2 years to determine if the risks have receded and that if Trump is allowed to return to Facebook, there will be a strict set of rapidly escalating sanctions that will be triggered if he commits further violations in future. This includes the permanent removal of his pages and accounts.
