0 1

Last night, Sunday 20th September 2020, at the 72nd Primetime Emmys Awards, things were a little different as the event took place virtually.

The event ceremony took place digitally for the first time on Sunday evening, without an audience or a splashy red carpet because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The awards did, however, still, honour the best in television.

In all 26 different award categories including acting, writing awards, different types of programs — comedies, drama,s and talk shows, among others, awards were given out to deserving recipients.

The night’s biggest winner was Schitt’s Creek, who won nine prizes – breaking the Emmys record for most wins in a single season for a comedy.

It was a glowing send-off for the Canadian series, which broadcast its sixth and final season this year.

Succession took home the night’s top prize, best drama series, as well as best actor for Jeremy Strong.

The HBO series also won prizes in the drama categories for best writing and best directing during the virtual ceremony.

This is such a very nice moment,” said the show’s British creator Jesse Armstrong from London. “But it’s sad not to be with the cast and crew to share it.”

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Euphoria star, Zendaya, made history as the youngest person to win an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. During her acceptance speech, she thanked peers who are “out there doing the work in the streets” and stressed: “There is hope in the young people.”

Zendaya is also the second black woman to win the category.

Regina King won the Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Angela Abar / Sister Night in Watchman while Uzo Aduba won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Shirley Chisholm in Mrs. America.

Both actresses paid tribute to Breonna Taylor during their Emmys
acceptance speeches, wearing t-shirts honouring the 26-year-old healthcare worker who was fatally shot by police in March 2020.

The full list of winners is available on the Emmys website.
