Wayne Rooney is 31 years old, one year younger than his former teammate Christiano Ronaldo and one year older than Lionel Messi, but somehow it is difficult to see his real age these days and easier to think of him as some older player, I could have said Totti but to the Italian legend’s credit, he was more effective than Rooney in his late thirties.

He joined Manchester United from Everton in 2004 when he had debuted professionally for the Merseyside club at the age of 16. Earlier aged 16 he had debuted for England in 2003 (a record that was broken by a younger Theo Walcott) but during those years, Rooney was a key player for both club and country and was awarded the best player in England in 2008, 2009,2014 and 2015 but now are his days of glory past?
After the employment of Jose Mourinho (though the signs have been there earlier even under Moyes and Van Gaal ) Wayne’s depreciation was very clear as he was most times lost at sea anywhere he was played and one could correctly say he was only allowed to play because he was an icon at the Old Trafford, even their top goal scorer. But you can only ride on past glories for so long and this transfer window, he reached an agreement with the club and left for his youth team, Everton. Many would have had their hopes upped when he scored in Everton’s first win of the season and again when they drew Manchester City, but after that it has been a downhill climb for both the team and the player and one is tempted to ask if it is not the best time for the player to leave for somewhere less competitive and not in the spot light while there is still some pride to salvage?

For a player for once made the top five FIFA Ballon d’Or shortlist and the FIFPro World 11 in 2011, it is disheartening to watch his decline and he would do us all a favor to stop showing his frustration as he did in their match against Chelsea.
