The British actor, comedian, and producer held nothing back during the course of his speech. During his opening monologue, which is the most talked-about part of the show, he made several expensive jokes with Hollywood celebrities as the butt of his jokes.
He also spoke about Kevin Hart stepping down from hosting the Oscars while acknowledging that he had hosted the Golden Globes five times without any reservations from the committee or the general public.
He said: “I mean, Kevin Hart was fired from the Oscars because of some offensive tweets, luckily, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association can hardly speak English, and they have no idea what Twitter is. Remember, they’re just jokes. We’re all going to die soon, and there’s no sequel.”
Just before he launched into the monologue, however, Ricky Gervais declared that he didn’t care about any backlash he may suffer as a result of it, and when he was done, it was very clear what he meant.
