Before reaching this final, Kevin Anderson currently ranked at no 32 has reached the quarterfinal of a major competition only once and after he beat Pablo Carreno Busta (Spain), he has now reached the grand slam title final for the first time at the age of 31. He also sets the record as the player with the lowest ranking to make it into the final.
Anderson had started the semifinal game on a low and dropped the first set losing 4-6 before he slotted into gear and roared to a back-to-back victory over the next sets winning 7-5, 6-3 and 6-4.
Rafael Nadal too was shocked into a first set loss of 4-6 as Juan Martin Del Porto who eliminated Roger Federer threatened to do the same to the ATP top seed. But the Spanish menace came back in style as the Argentine could not keep up with the pace of Nadal’s balls and once he lost nine straight games in the match.
