Dominic Thiem defeated former US Open champion Marin Cilic in the third round to prove why he is the main challenger to Novak Djokovic at this year’s event.
The second seed will be hopeful of finally getting his hands on a grand slam title after losing in three final, including one to Djokovic in the Australian Open in January.
Dominic Thiem might face Novak Djokovic in the final if he manages to get that far and he will be eyeing his chance after taking out the 2014 champion Cilic 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-3.
“I am much happier, not 100 percent yet, I still have to raise my level if I want to go deeper, especially in the next round,” Thiem says of his game.
“Normally I am capable of doing this in the slams. I am not 100 percent happy with the way I am playing yet. Today was a good win against a great champion and a good player and that should give me a boost.”
Next up for the Austrian is Felix Auger-Aliassime who conquered Andy Murray.
The 15th seed, still only 20, also continued to be imperious as he trounced Corentin Moutet 6-1 6-0 6-3 to record his best-ever performance in a Grand Slam.
Auger-Aliassime may still be baby-faced but he is determined to show a killer instinct on court
“I’m here to impose myself,” he says. “Outside the court I’m a pretty kind person but once I step on court, it’s the best man that wins.
“Only one survives. You’ve got to step it up with that animal and killer instinct.”
Daniil Medvedev continues to cruise through in New York
Daniil Medvedev won with another straight-sets victory on Saturday as he continued his cruise through the US Open draw in New York.
His run to the final last year was full of drama but so far he has not lost more than four games in any set across three matches.

Medvedev was in cruise control from start to finish beating American JJ Wolf, 6-3 6-3 6-2 to reach the fourth round.
“It’s good that I managed to win in three sets,” Medvedev says on court after his victory.
“Six months of not playing tennis, it’s not easy to recover from four and five-set matches. With a day off and just a three-setter, I feel good.”
Medvedev will next face either another American, Frances Tiafoe, or Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in the next round.
