Brilliant United blow CSKA Moscow away, PSG defeat Bayern Munich as Chelsea overcome Atletico in Spain and Basel put five past Benfica.
The last fixtures in the Champions league second round was played last night and it gave us some highs and some lows, stay with us as we take you into the highlights through words.
Group A.
Manchester United maintain top spot after in-form Lukaku grabbed a first half brace in a match that saw Martial earn his start with electric performance as they condmned CSKA Moscow to a 4-1 defeat on their own soil. In the other fixture, Basel thrashed Benfica in a one sided victory that ended 5-0 with Oberlin scoring a brace for the home team and Almeida was shown a straight red card for a cynical infringement that leaves them bottom of the table with 0 points. Basel are ahead of CSKA with a goal difference of four.
Group B.
Scottish giants showed their supremacy against Anderlecht with a deserved 3-0 victory as they grabbed their first Champions league points this season and are placed at 3 in their group standings with 2 goals between them and Bayern Munich who came away from Paris with scars. Paris Saint-Germain displayed what money can do as the floored Bayern in a heavy defeat that will leave the Bavarians reeling after Dani Alves, Cavani and Neymar shared the 3 goals amongst each other and in that order, with the Bundesliga champions not able to answer any goal back.
Group C.
Roma edged out a surprisingly difficult Qarabag outfit in a close 2-1 defeat and the match had looked to tilt after Henrique clawed one back for Qarabag before halftime after Dzeko had double the lead following Manolas’ opener. Chelsea fought hard and got a deserved victory against a characteristic lackluster Atletico side and left it late into stoppage time before completing the 2-1 comeback thanks to substitute Batshuayi. Now Chelsea stay top with Roma in second place.
Group D.
After Higuain’s opener, Juventus struggled to get their dominion into results but in the 80th minute, Mario Mandzukic made it 2-0 and the hosts were able to sit back to see out the ecounter with Olympiacos. Barcelona were below par against Sporting CP who were all over the Catalans and deserved to at least come off with a point but instead, an own goal proved to be their undoing as Barcelona continue 100% start of the season. Juventus are in third place as Sporting are ahead with a goal diffence.
We await the third round of the group stages, but for now, we say bye and remember to share your thoughts on the matches so far.
