As the Coronavirus pandemic keeps theatres shut in the United States and all over the world, the company has announced that the much-delayed movie will be launched on the company’s streaming platform, Disney+ instead.
So, for Trailer Thursday today, we are sharing the final trailer of this fabulous movie in time for its release to the streaming service in September.
This decision has been described by Disney CEO, Bob Chapek as a “one-off” for a Disney blockbuster, who said:
“Mulan,” a mega-budget live-action remake of the tale of a legendary Chinese warrior, will be available from September 4 in homes to Disney+ subscribers for an additional $29.99. We see this as an opportunity to bring this incredible film to a broad audience currently unable to go to movie theatres, while also further enhancing the value and attractiveness of a Disney+ subscription.”
As it launches digitally in the US, however, it will launch simultaneously in theatres in places like China where plans to launch Disney+ have not been announced.
This move comes as a second wave of Coronavirus put an end to thoughts of a city reopening in core cities like New York and Los Angeles.
Mulan cost an estimated $200 million to make and Chapek hopes that, like other movies which have gone directly to streaming amid the pandemic, Disney can recoup some of its investment in the film.
Mulan was set for a March release, with Disney even holding its red carpet premiere in Hollywood before the movie release was postponed many times.
The premise of the movie is: “When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father.
“Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.”
