It is no secret that most Nigerian both boys and girls, the old and the young, eat the meat last when having their meals. What may not be so clear are the reasons behind this curious habit. Happily, for us, the mystery have now been unravelled thanks to Jumia Travels, according to folks using the internet.
Continue reading to find out the rationales behind this explicable this nationwide phenomenon.
1. The best is saved for the last
Apparently, the meat is a kind of a trophy for successfully demolishing your mountain of eba (or what other plant-based materials you have eaten). After all, eating a vegan meal can’t be easy for us omnivores carnivores.
2. It’s kinda embarrassing to eat a meal sans meat
I mean, come on, every Nigerian can identify with that especially in a public place. Heaven forbids that a chick or a guy you have an eye on should catch you with a meatless plate. You would wish the ground would up to swallow you or alternatively, you could just form and pretend that you’ve eaten enough. Lol.
3. Apparently, it’s a serious motivator to finish a meal
Apparently, for some people, saving the meat until the end of the meal is an inducement to not only eat their meal but to finish it as well. In which case I say, “Bring it on!” I support every behaviour that discourages wastes in any form, so let’s continue cutting the food wastage.
4. It’s down to upbringing
Because mum says so! I was a victim of this tenet and so were virtually every child body that I knew during my childhood. I guess with most people it becomes a case of, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
5. It could well be for economic reasons
Everybody knows that country is hard and that eba, rice, yam tuwo and other plant based food are cheaper (and more importantly would belle full one beta) than meat or fish. So, if one can only afford a piece of meat, chances are that they would reserve that until the end of the meal – more so if any of the factors above comes into play as well.
6. It could well be a bad habit
I can pinpoint number 4 reason as the culprit for this idea. No one would like to be thought of as ill-mannered, and if this reason holds any water, I can see some people not eating their meat till the end of the meal.
Now, you have it! The reasons why Naija no dey eat meat until them finish their meal. Do you agree with the reasons and is there any other you think that should have been on the list? Tell us in the comment section below or in our twitter and Facebook pages.
