Actress Sadau Rahama talked about her transition from Kannywood to Nollywood

Upcoming actress Sadau Rahama opened on her experiences in the Nollywood industry

 

The actress, who formerly featured in Kannywood roles saw a reversal of fortune last year when she was expelled from Kannywood for having hugged Jos-based pop star Classiq in an on-screen music video. Folks at Kannywood thought that was a violation of the code of conduct for the industry, and kicked her out without pausing to reflect.

 

 

Well, when one door closes, a window opens somewhere, is a saying many people are familiar with, and that was exactly what happened to Rahama. The incidence directly accelerated/precipitated/expedited her transition to Nollywood, wherefore she had featured in several movies in the past one year including “The Light Will Come“, “Super Story“, “Sons of the Caliphate” and recently, the as yet unreleased movie “The Accidental Spy” where she acted opposite Ramsey Nouah.

 

 

The Guardian Nigerian caught up with the actress and here are some of the things we learned from that interview.

1. Her professional calling is to be in front of cameras.

“I would be a model, still in the industry“, if she weren’t an actress.

 

2. She grew up in Kaduna and her family weren’t overly enthused to the idea of her being an actress.

My mum thought the “Industry is not a good place for a young girl like me. But she has still been supportive.”

 

3. The Kannywood incident wasn’t all bad

It’s  (the ban) a stepping stone, I am grateful because it has opened a lot of doors because a lot of people didn’t know me until the ban happened.

4. She has no problem rejecting some scripts

“I was asked to play a lesbian and I just felt a side of Rahama that couldn’t do it.”

 

5. Being a Muslim in Nollywood is not a big deal

“There are other Muslims in the Nollywood industry, it’s just that we have different cultures and different ways we live our lives, but I haven’t faced any problems yet”

 

 

6. Her most memorable role was playing a nun in “Tatoo”

“It was a totally different side to Rahama, quite different from what people are used to seeing. I mean I loved the role.”, she said.

Moreover, having been to a Christian school, Corinthians International school, the character felt somehow familiar.

“It wasn’t too different. I just step into the character and be that role.”

 

7. Her role model is Priyanka Chopra.

” We have similar problems and are facing similar situations because at some point, they would have to accept you and appreciate, what you’re doing.”

 

8. She wouldn’t compromise her beliefs and values

“It’s just that I don’t want to change to what people want me to be. I want to be me and I want people to accept that.”
