Ramos penalty puts Madrid four points clear; other European results

Real Madrid is showing a lot more zeal than their counterpart Barcelona in the challenge for the La Liga League title as they dug deep to win late into their game against Getafe.

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos sealed victory from the penalty spot late in the game to put Madrid 4 points clear at the top of the La Liga table.

The derby was keenly contested as Getafe and their high intensity, the physical pressing game almost dented Madrid’s hope of securing maximum points.

Zidane’s men came closest to breaking the deadlock before the break when Vinicius Jr connected with Ferland Mendy’s low cross, only to be denied by a stunning David Soria save.

Getafe was not good for 90 minutes and it could prove costly for the team trying to get into Europe as they began to tire in the final third of the game allowing Real started to dominate. Mathias Olivera caught Dani Carvajal inside the box and gave Real the chance to take the lead from 12 yards.

The captain, Ramos, made no mistake from the spot as the hosts got all three points they barely deserved. it was a victory that gives them more breathing space ahead of second-placed Barcelona with only five games now remaining.

Other La Liga midweek results

Eibar 0 – 2 Osasuna

With only 6 points above relegation, Eibar would need to be more careful if they are to avoid the drop to the second tier of Spanish football. They lost at home to Osasuna who are having a fairly good season this campaign.

Goals from Ruben Garcia in the 6th and 74th minute of the game secured all three points for the visitors.
