Premier League Roundup: Thomas Tuchel secures first win as Chelsea boss; Brighton stun Tottenham for first home win

Thomas Tuchel in his second attempt as Chelsea manager finally got his first win as goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and the recalled Marcos Alonso helped his side see off Burnley 2-0.

Cezar Azpilicueta who is playing under his eighth Blues manager led by example by finishing off a fine flowing move five minutes before half-time to open the scoring at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s left-back Marcus Alonso who was making his first start since September after being frozen out under the previous boss Frank Lampard then sealed the victory late on with a fine strike.

The win ensures Chelsea move up to seventh in the Premier League, while Burnley slip to 16th in the table below Newcastle on goals scored.

Thomas Tuchel said: “It was a very complete display, both offensively and defensively. We only managed to concede one shot, which was absolutely amazing. At the same time, we never lost patience with the ball, controlled the game, created a lot of chances, put the game high up on the pitch with very good counter pressing.

“So there was a lot of good on the pitch out there and for that, I am very happy we got this well-deserved win.

“If we can find a starting XI that can guarantee us winning 20 in a row, we will not change, but it is very unlikely this will happen. So we will need everybody, but I am only some days in.

“We decided very late on the back three and the two sixes will stay because of the impact we expected from Burnley and they did very well. And we did some changes offensively, just to do them to have some different type of players with different characteristics on the pitch.

“And at the same time, to give everyone the chance to show up in competitions. Right now, every player has a right to start for us because I’m very happy with the quality, intensity and devotion in training and the games so far.

“So it is super-hard selections, or maybe at the same time super easy as I give everybody the chance to show up and maybe that is why there were a little bit more surprises than usual.”

Brighton 1-0 Tottenham: The Seagulls secure their first home win of the season in shock win over Spurs

Brighton 1-0 Tottenham

Brighton boosted their chances of surviving the drop into the SkyBet Championship after securing their first home success of the season with a 1-0 victory over a lacklustre Tottenham.

Graham Potter’s side played better in the first half, but only had Leandro Trossard’s 17th-minute strike to show for their dominance.

Spurs, who handed Gareth Bale just his second Premier League start since his return to the club in place of the injured Harry Kane, struggled for any sort of rhythm.

It even took them until the 75th minute to get their first real chance.

Brighton ensured they protected their lead and ultimately move seven points clear of the relegation zone following the win, while the result means Spurs, who have suffered back-to-back defeats in the league, stay sixth.

Managers reactions…

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho said: “I saw two different halves; the first half, where I saw immediately we made two mistakes in a row. They hit the post from one, the other one was a goal. The boys felt too much the goal that we conceded in the first half. It was a sad half. In the second half, especially in the last 30 minutes, I saw a team with a different soul.

“I saw a team that was ready to give everything and was ready to gamble everything. To finish the way we did, probably the boys deserved more than what we got. The last feeling is usually the one that you take home, so I leave with positive feelings because my boys showed in the last 30 minutes that they wanted anything but a defeat.

“We didn’t start well and my team was a bit sad. To concede a goal at the beginning of the game brought even more sadness, and knocked our self-esteem. The team was suffering but the second half saw a completely different attitude. We were trying everything and the spirit in the second half was good.

“Some individuals were suffering with fatigue, but they tried until the last second. A defeat brings always a bad feeling, and the performance wasn’t very good, but I leave with a positive feeling towards my boys.”
