Premier League Roundup: Marcus Rashford lifts Manchester United into second place after late winner against Wolves; Plus other results

Manchester United ended 2020 with a smash and grab win against a rigid Wolverhampton Wanderers side after a stoppage-time goal by Marcus Rashford which sees United seal the second position in the Premier League.

The game was heading for a drab goalless draw as Wolves frustrated United for 93 minutes only for Marccus Rashford’s left-footed effort to come off Romain Saiss and wrongfooted Rui Patricio.

Bruno Fernandes got the best chance of the first half, but he could not turn home Mason Greenwood’s sublime cross at close range, while David de Gea also did an effective job of denying Saiss at the other end.

VAR also denied United a goal with 20 minutes remaining when Edinson Cavani turned home a loose ball from a corner, but he was adjudged offside after a VAR review. Conor Coady was also found to have handled the ball in the same action and it came back in favour of Wolves.

The youthful Wolves side kept United at bay for all 90 minutes, but Rashford grabbed the winner in additional time to move them to within two points of leaders Liverpool in the Premier League.
