Premier League Roundup: Arsenal inspired a comeback to draw at West Ham; Spurs back to winning ways

Alexandre Lacazette was the hero for Arsenal as his 82nd-minute header completed a remarkable comeback by the Gunners to draw 3-3 in a breathless encounter at the London Stadium against West Ham.

The Hammers raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half with Jesse Lingard, Jarrod Bowen, and Tomas Soucek all scoring to give them what seemed an unassailable advantage.

However, Lacazette played a huge role in front of goal as the gunners began the sensational response. Laca’s shot deflected in off Soucek shortly before halftime to make it 3-1, before another own goal from Craig Dawson further reduced the deficit just after the hour mark.

West Ham were devastated when Lacazette met Nicolas Pepe’s cross to secure a share of the spoils as it ended 3-3 on the afternoon.

The draw most certainly will feel like a defeat for David Moyes’ side having been in such a commanding position, but his team remains in fifth place on 49 points, two adrift of Chelsea in the final Champions League place.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had this to say after the match: “I’m very disappointed because I cannot accept my team to play the way we did in periods in the first half. I expect we play at the level we did afterward.

“The first goal, it can happen. It is a really good combination [by West Ham]. That is fine. The way we concede the second and third is unacceptable. Afterward, the attitude and togetherness we showed – it is really difficult to do what we have done. We got really close to winning and I think we deserved to win it but the first part really worried me.”

On switching off at a set-piece: “Unacceptable. We talk about that all the time. I don’t know if it’s a hangover from Europe, tired, focus, it was more than one player that switched off. We have to right that quick.”

Stats and facts from the match (Backed by Opta)

  • West Ham failed to win after being three goals ahead in a Premier League game for the first time since September 1998 (3-4 v Wimbledon). Arsenal, meanwhile, avoided defeat in a Premier League game they trailed by 3+ goals in for only the second time – previously doing so v Bournemouth in January 2017 (3-3).
  • This was the third time in the Premier League season that a team has led by 3+ goals and failed to win (also West Brom 3-3 Chelsea and Spurs 3-3 West Ham) – the most instances in a single Premier League campaign since 2010-11 (also three).
  • West Ham have only won one of their last 11 games against Arsenal in the Premier League (D3 L7), failing to win any of their four meetings in the last two league campaigns (D1 L3).
  • Tomas Soucek is the first player to score both a goal and an own goal in the same home Premier League game for West Ham since Frank Lampard v Leicester at Upton Park in November 1998.

Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham: Spurs up to sixth with victory at Villa Park

Premier League Roundup

Tottenham showed they can bounce back from a difficult week as they breathed new life into their bid to secure European football next season with a 2-0 victory at Aston Villa on Super Sunday.

Jose Mourinho‘s side, who were under pressure after defeat to north London rivals Arsenal last weekend and a Europa League exit at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb in midweek, were in front midway through the first half thanks to Carlos Vinicius’ first Premier League goal.

Harry Kane, who partnered Vinicius in the attack put the match beyond doubt after scoring from the penalty spot to seal a vital three points for Spurs.

Spurs move above Everton and Liverpool into sixth with the win, one point behind West Ham in fifth, and three behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Villa, who were without the injured Jack Grealish again, stay 10th with defeat denting their own European hopes.
