Premier League: Manchester City grab second spot in the Premier League after win against Aston Villa

Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan‘s late goals broke Aston Villa’s resolve and puts Pep Guardiola’s side second in the Premier League with a 2-0 win at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

Silva opened the scoring in the 80th-minute in a stunning but controversial fashion as Rodri was adjudged to have been onside by Tyrone Mings’ heavy touch in the build-up.

Villa’s manager Dean Smith was sent to the stands in the chaotic demonstration that followed.

“I don’t think anybody can tell me why the goal’s been given; he’s taken advantage of an offside position,” said Smith.

“I told the fourth official I thought they’d had juggling balls for Christmas.”

Ilkay Gundogan then sealed the win with a spot-kick after Matty Cash was ruled to have handballed in his own penalty area, leaving the German midfielder to beat Emiliano Martinez from 12 yards.

Aston Villa would feel hard done by the scoreline as they did a perfect job in stretching their hosts throughout the night and also come close to scoring a number of times themselves in the second half.

In the end, they ultimately faltered in their quest to stop Pep Guardiola from celebrating his 50th birthday by taking his side top of the Premier League, until they were knocked back down to second by Manchester United’s win at Fulham later on Wednesday.
