Meet the 10 major House of the Dragon casts and some details about the actors playing them.
House of the Dragon is a fantasy drama TV show that is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born. The writer of the original novels, George R. R. Martin, created the series alongside screenwriter Ryan Condal. While House of the Dragon does not have a standalone book of its own, it is based on portions of Fire & Blood, a book from the A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
Just after its first episode, viewers are already in love with the series. Several features stand out, including its cinematography, CGI, and cast. Well, here, you get to meet the main cast.

#1 – Paddy Considine (King Viserys I Targaryen)
Paddy Considine plays the warm and kind King Viserys I Targaryen. He is actually 48 years old during the time he played the aged king and has received two British Academy Film Awards, three Evening Standard British Film Awards, and British Independent Film Awards. Considine played the lead role as love-struck misfit Alfie in 2000’s Last Resort, and you may remember him for playing small parts in the BBC gangster series Peaky Blinders and the HBO miniseries The Outsider. Before that, he played lead roles in 2003’s In America and 2004’s My Summer of Love and supporting parts in Doctor Sleep and 24 Hour Party People.
In House of the Dragon, he plays the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms. His character is regarded as “a warm, kind, and decent man” who was chosen by a council of lords to succeed his grandfather, Jaehaerys I Targaryen, as king.
#2 – Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen)
Matthew Robert Smith is known for playing the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC series Doctor Who and Prince Philip in the Netflix series The Crown. He started his career as a stage actor and starred in the 2010 Sci-Fi movie Womb and Skynet in Terminator Genisys. He was Milo in 2022’s Morbius as well.
In House of the Dragon, he plays the heir presumptive to the Iron Throne, being the younger brother of King Viserys and grandson to King Jaehaerys. His character is the uncle of Princess Rhaenyra. Prince Daemon is also an unrivaled warrior and an experienced dragonrider.
#3 – Emma D’Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen)
Emma Zia D’Arcy is an English actor that identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. Before getting the role of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, D’Arcy starred in the Prime Video comedy horror series Truth Seekers, the Netflix series Wanderlust and the second season of Prime Video’s Hanna.
In House of the Dragon, they play a dragonrider and pure-blood Valyrian. Their character is King Viserys’s firstborn child.
#4 – Rhys Ifans (Ser Otto Hightower)
Rhys Owain Evans is an actor and musician, and he was the frontman of Welsh rock music bands the Peth and Super Furry Animals. His first notable role was in Julia Robert’s Notting Hill in 1999, but he has embodied several other notable roles since then. He played Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Dr. Curt Connors / Lizard in the live-action film The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as Grigori Rasputin in The King’s Man.
In House of the Dragon, he plays Alicent’s father and the Hand of the King. His character serves King Viserys and the realm, but he is a bitter political rival of Prince Daemon.

In House of the Dragon, she plays the daughter of Ser Otto Hightower, and she grew up in the Red Keep and is a part of the king’s inner circle. She is known as the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms.
#6 – Steve Toussaint (Lord Corlys Velaryon)
Steve Toussaint is a British actor of Barbadian origins and has starred in more than 30 action and drama productions like Macbeth in 1998, Walking Dead in 2002, Mutant Chronicles in 2008, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in 2010, Doctor Who in 2020, as well as the Jurassic World Evolution video games.
In House of the Dragon, he plays the head of House Velaryon, a most famous seafarer in Westerosi history known as the “Sea Snake”.
#7 – Eve Best (Princess Rhaenys Targaryen)
Eve Best is popular for her role as Dr. Eleanor O’Hara in the Showtime series Nurse Jackie between 2009 and 2013. She also played First Lady Dolley Madison in the American Experience television special in 2011, as well as Monica Chatwin in the BBC miniseries The Honourable Woman in 2014. #8 – Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria)
Sonoya Mizuno is a Japanese-born British actress, model, and ballet dancer who has performed in director Alex Garland’s works such as Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), and Devs (2020). She had minor roles in the films La La Land, Beauty and the Beast (2017), and Crazy Rich Asians. Mizuno also starred in the Netflix psychology dark comedy miniseries Maniac.
In House of the Dragon, she plays a foreign-born dancer who rose to become Prince Daemon’s most trusted ally.
#9 – Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole)
Fabien Frankel is an English, French and Iraqi actor. He started his acting career in 2019 after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Acting from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2017. He played Fabien in the 2019 romantic comedy Last Christmas and Theo Sipowicz in the pilot episode of the 2019 police procedural drama series NYPD Blue.
In House of the Dragon, he plays a skilled swordsman from the Dornish Marches and is the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven.
#10 – Graham McTavish (Ser Harrold Westerling)
Graham McTavish is a Scottish actor known for his roles as Dwalin in The Hobbit film trilogy, Vlad Dracula ?epe? in the Netflix animated franchise Castlevania, and Loki in several Marvel animated projects. He also starred as William Munny, the Saint of Killers in the AMC series Preacher and Dougal MacKenzie and William Buccleigh MacKenzie in the Starz series Outlander. He is also known for his roles in the video game franchise Uncharted as the main antagonist Zoran Lazarevi?.
In House of the Dragon, he plays Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, who has served since King Jaehaerys and was once a powerful knight. His job requires him to protect Princess Rhaenyra.
While these are the main actors portraying the key characters, there are several others tasked with bringing recurring roles to life, and you will get to know several of them as the series progresses.
