Madrid’s new boss says that he’d rather have Kovacic at the Bernabeu because of his importance but the Croatian has made it clear that he will not stay at Madrid if he does not become a regular starter.
Real Madrid are reportedly working on a short-term loan deal with Chelsea for the player.
“It’s true that Kovacic has expressed his desire to leave,” Lopetegui said.
“I wanted him to stay as he is important for us but it is true that nothing is 100 percent yet.
“There is no deal done for him yet. If he leaves we will have to find another player of his level and we will look for solutions.”
